Bengaluru, Dec 5: Defending champions Karnataka were knocked out of the Ranji Trophy 2015-16 season after their 53-run loss to Maharashtra yesterday (December 4).
R Vinay Kumar-led Karnataka had won 2 titles in a row but their dream of completing a hat-trick was shattered by Maharashtra. This also put a halt to their 34-match unbeaten streak in the tournament over 2 seasons.

Karnataka finished the league at 5th position in Group A. Vidarbha (29 points) topped followed by Bengal (28) and Assam (26), who all qualified for the quarter-finals.
In Group B, giants of Ranji Trophy, Mumbai progressed to last-eight stage by finishing as number one with 35 points. Punjab (26) and Madhya Pradesh (24) were the other 2 who went into the knockouts.
In Group C, only 2 teams earn qualification. Saurashtra (36) and Jharkhand (31) made the cut.
