The cricketing world has witnessed an intense year of One Day International (ODI) cricket, highlighted by the 2023 World Cup, where Australia emerged victorious.
However, the revelation of the ODI XI of the year by Star Sports has stirred controversy, particularly among cricket enthusiasts and experts like former Indian head coach, Ravi Shastri.

During the lunch break on day two of the India-South Africa Test match, Star Sports unveiled an ODI XI dominated by Indian players, which did not sit well with Shastri.
The ODI XI in question features a staggering eight Indian players, including the likes of Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami.
It is a lineup that has drawn considerable attention, given that only one Australian player, Adam Zampa, was included, despite Australia's triumph in the World Cup under Pat Cummins' captaincy.
Shastri emphatically voiced his opinions on Star Sports, expressing disbelief at the exclusion of renowned players such as Rashid Khan, Mitchell Marsh, and Quinton de Kock. He also hinted at a potential bias in the voting process, suggesting that it seemed skewed in favor of Indian players.
In his critique, Shastri did not hold back, stating, "It's a joke. Rashid Khan… does he play? I think there must be only Indians voting in there. No one else."
He went on to emphasise the impact players like Rashid Khan could have had in the team, describing him as one of the best around and arguing that a combination of Ravindra Jadeja and Rashid would make for an ideal all-rounder duo, capable of performing across all surfaces worldwide.
Shastri's discontent highlights the broader discussion on the need for equitable representation and acknowledgment of players from various cricketing nations.
The debate spurred by the ODI XI team selection serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in creating such lists. The questions raised by Ravi Shastri about the selection process and the inclusion of players also point towards a larger conversation about fair play and recognition in the sport.
While the year 2023 has been a significant one for ODI cricket, the discussions following the ODI XI announcement ensure that the sport remains as engaging off the field as it is on it, with the cricketing community eagerly awaiting a resolution to the concerns raised by one of the game's most respected figures.
