Ravichandran Ashwin is reportedly set to part ways with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the IPL 2026 season, marking a significant development in the veteran spinner's IPL journey.
Ashwin, who returned to CSK in the IPL 2025 mega auction after nearly a decade away from the franchise, struggled throughout the season. Despite being bought for a substantial INR 9.75 crore, he managed only seven wickets in nine matches, with an economy rate exceeding 9 runs per over. His underwhelming performance also saw him benched on multiple occasions as CSK explored younger bowling options.

Ashwin has already informed CSK management of his decision to leave, though the exact reasons remain undisclosed. It is believed the 38-year-old spinner has made a firm choice to seek a new challenge or opportunities with other franchises. He is also expected to relinquish his position as Director of Operations at the CSK Academy, a role he has held for the past year, to avoid conflicts of interest should he join a different team.
Ashwin's initial IPL career began with CSK from 2009 to 2015, where he was integral to the team's early successes. Over the years, he represented multiple franchises, including Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals, before making his anticipated return to CSK in 2025. However, the comeback did not live up to expectations, with Ashwin himself acknowledging the need to improve, especially within the powerplay overs where he leaked runs.
With CSK looking to rebuild and focus on a younger core after recent underperforming seasons, Ashwin's departure may free up purse money and squad space for fresh talent. Speculation also suggests potential trades in the upcoming IPL 2026 auction window, including a possible swap involving Rajasthan Royals' Sanju Samson.
