Ravindra Jadeja Injury Update: Will Star All Rounder Be Available For IND vs ENG 2nd Test?

By MyKhel Staff

India suffered a 28-run loss to England in the first Test of the five-match series in Hyderabad, but the team may have further bad news after star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was seen clutching his hamstring on Sunday (January 28).

On the penultimate day of the Hyderabad Test, Jadeja was sent packing after a sensational effort in the field from Ben Stokes, who ran in from mid-on, picked up the ball and threw underarm it into the stumps at the non-striker's end for the run out.

Ravindra Jadeja injury update ahead of IND vs ENG 2nd Test

At a crucial juncture of the match, the star India all-rounder was trying to steal a single in the 39th over of the Indian run chase. And, after he was run-out, Jadeja clutched his hamstring and walked off the pitch.

While the team was devasted with the loss, there was no update provided on-air about Jadeja's injury. Indian Head coach Rahul Dravid also didn't know the extent of the injury.

"We'll see. I honestly haven't had a chance to speak to the physio as yet. Once I get back, I'll speak to him and see what it is about," Dravid said at the post-match media conference.

Will Jadeja miss IND vs ENG 2nd Test?

There is no clarity on his injury as it stands, but the extent of the hamstring injury decides the duration of lay-off. Even if it is not a tear and just merely strain, it still might be advisable to give him rest for a week if not more.

The turnaround between first and second Test is a very short one - just four days - as it starts on February 2 in Visakhapatnam. It is still not clear whether Jadeja will travel with the team to Vizag or head to National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Jadeja, who had missed out on a Test match last month in South Africa when he developed back spasms on the morning of the first Test in Centurion, could miss the second Test vs England if it's just a strain, but if it's a tear, then he may miss more action.

How can India fill Jadeja void?

India already have a ready-made replacement in the playing 11 in the form of Axar Patel, who is capable with the bat and also bowls left-arm spin, but offers something different to Jadeja with the ball.

India may look to bring in Kuldeep Yadav as the spin bowling option. However, India will miss Jadeja the batter, who was the top scorer in India's first innings with 87 and also took five wickets across two innings.
