Ravindra Jadeja released from Duleep Trophy: Three reasons why all-rounder could be unhappy with BCCI

Ravindra Jadeja on Tuesday (August 27) was released from Duleep Trophy Team B squad, and a reason was not given by the BCCI. Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik were also released from their respective squad ahead of the first-round matches which starts from September, but BCCI named replacements and revealed that the two pacers were ill.

The star all-rounder was last seen in action in the final of T20 World Cup 2024 against South Africa on June 29. He announced his T20I retirement alongside Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma after India won the ICC trophy after beating South Africa.

Among the 15 players, who were part of India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad, 12 have featured in matches for India after the end of the ICC showpiece event. Jasprit Bumrah, the most treasured India bowler has been rightly rested ever since. The pacer was out of action for almost a year before the World Cup 2023 due to a back injury, and managing his workload is crucial.

Yuzvendra Chahal is the other player to sit out of the Indian team post June 29 when India ended their 13-year-old weight for a world cup. Chahal is a non-contracted player and did not feature in any of the T20 World Cup 2024 matches for India. His last international outing was back in August 2023.

Therefore as things stand, Ravindra Jadeja happens to be the only high-profile player to sit out and not be in action for two months now. If he is picked for the Bangladesh Tests, he would be entering the series without a game in almost three months.

Ravindra Jadeja being released from the Duleep Trophy raises a few eyebrows. Is Ravindra Jadeja unhappy with BCCI? Let's have a look at the possible reasons.

Sri Lanka ODI's snub: While Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were called to play in the ODIs against Sri Lanka, Ravindra Jadeja wasn't named in the squad. Later, chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that Jadeja was still in the scheme of things, adding that the BCCI release should have 'cleared' that the senior all-rounder was rested.

"Not at all dropped. Either him or Axar. Big test season coming up. I don’t think 3 games would have mattered. We should have cleared. He is still within the scheme of things," he had said.

However, the fact of the matter was that Axar Patel was indeed picked over Ravindra Jadeja. Agarkar himself said it before the team departure. Also, keeping in mind the upcoming Test season, Kohli and Rohit could also have been rested. However, they were called after a reported request from new head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Non-captaincy role in Duleep Trophy: Ravindra Jadeja was named in Team B of Duleep Trophy 2024. The side will be led by Abhimanyu Easwaran, a player who is yet to make his India debut.

Jadeja, a veteran of 72 Test matches, and the number one ranked Test all-rounder in the world might not have liked it. Also, seniors Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin were not named in any of the squads. In terms of stature and seniority, Jadeja is no less than anyone in the team.

'Ignored' at Wankhede Felicitation ceremony: Like Kohli and Rohit, Jadeja also retired from T20I cricket after India won the T20 World Cup 2024. During the felicitation ceremony at packed Wankhede Stadium, Kohli and Rohit were called upon the stage to address the team and the fans. Ravindra Jadeja might have expected a similar treatment.
