While the focus ahead of the World Cup 2023 may entirely be on Suryakumar Yadav's form and Shreyas Iyer's fitness, there is one more star player who has been flying under the radar for a while now.
India's middle-order conundrum and fitness of their key players grabbed all the attention in the past few months. So much so that Ravindra Jadeja's batting woes in the ODI format went almost unnoticed.

However, the poor outing of the 34-year-old in the Asia Cup 2023 has brought it to the fore. He failed to deliver in the crunch situation against Pakistan in the league stage match as India collapsed at 166 despite a brilliant recovery courtesy Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya. He scored 14 off 22 balls.
In the low-scoring thriller against Sri Lanka, Jadeja could manage to score only 4 off 19 as the Indian innings collapsed at 213. The star all-rounder disappointed again on Friday. With India resting their two key batters, Ravindra Jadeja failed to rise up to the occasion and was outdone by Mustafizur Rahman for just 7 off 12 in a tricky run-chase. Shubman Gill and Axar Patel fought a lone battle as India lost to Bangladesh in the Asia cup for the first time since 2012.
Ravindra Jadeja hasn't scored a single ODI fifty since the start of 2022. Barring eight unbeaten runs off seven balls in the third ODI against West Indies in August, he hasn't played a single knock with a strike rate in excess of 100 during the period.
Jadeja in ODIs since 2022:
29 (44), SR 65.907*
(15), SR 46.66
45* (69), SR 65.21
16 (39), SR 41.02
18 (33), SR 54.54
16* (21), SR 76.19
10 (21), SR 47.61
8* (7), SR 114.28
14 (22), SR 63.63
4 (19), SR 21.05
7 (12), SR 58.33
The numbers are worrying for India and Jadeja who is expected to bat at number seven and give India a solid finish at the World Cup 2023. In case Jadeja fails to pull up his socks, Axar Patel can find himself in the eleven.
Axar has been named in India's provisional World Cup squad due to his improved batting performance in the last two years. On Friday, he smashed 42 off just 34 balls and almost took India over the line. In the match, Ravindra Jadeja bowled 10 overs for 53 runs and the wicket of Shamim Hossain. Axar Patel picked the wicket of dangerous Mehidy Hasan Miraz and gave away 47 runs in 9 overs.
