RCB All-Rounder Tim David Handed One-Match Suspension For IPL 2027; Here's Why
Ahmedabad, June 1: Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Tim David has been handed a one-match suspension for the start of the next IPL season after accumulating five demerit points during IPL 2026.
The Australian power-hitter was also fined 50 per cent of his match fee following a breach of the IPL Code of Conduct during RCB's five-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday (May 31).

The punishment marks David's third disciplinary offence of the season and brings an unwanted end to an otherwise successful campaign that saw him lift a second consecutive IPL title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
What Did Tim David Do in the IPL 2026 Final?
According to an IPL statement, David was found guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which relates to throwing a ball or any other item of cricket equipment in an inappropriate or dangerous manner during a match.
The incident occurred during the 10th over of Gujarat Titans' innings when a wicket fell. David was found to have thrown an ice bag aggressively in the direction of on-field umpire Nitin Menon.
The Australian admitted the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by match referee Javagal Srinath.
"Tim David, Batter, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee and has also accumulated two Demerit Points for breaching Level 1 of the IPL's Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials," the IPL said in a statement.
Third Offence of the Season
The final incident proved costly because it was David's third disciplinary breach of IPL 2026.
Earlier in the season, during RCB's clash against Mumbai Indians on April 13, David was fined 25 per cent of his match fee and received one demerit point for violating Article 2.4, which concerns disobeying an umpire's instruction during a match.
He was again sanctioned on May 11 after RCB's fixture against Mumbai Indians, this time for breaching Article 2.6, which relates to using an obscene, offensive or insulting gesture. That incident resulted in a fine of 30 per cent of his match fee and two additional demerit points.
With two more demerit points added following the final, David's tally reached five for the season.
Why Has Tim David Been Suspended?
Under the IPL's disciplinary regulations, the accumulation of five demerit points triggers an automatic one-match suspension.
David's latest breach took his season tally to five demerit points:
| Date | Opponent | Offence | Demerit Points | Fine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| April 13, 2026 | Mumbai Indians | Disobeying umpire's instruction (Article 2.4) | 1 | 25% Match Fee |
| May 11, 2026 | Mumbai Indians | Obscene/Offensive Gesture (Article 2.6) | 2 | 30% Match Fee |
| June 1, 2026 | Gujarat Titans (Final) | Throwing an Ice Bag Aggressively (Article 2.9) | 2 | 50% Match Fee |
| Total | - | - | 5 | - |
As a result, the 30-year-old will miss RCB's opening match of IPL 2027 unless further disciplinary developments alter the sanction.
Sour Note After Successful Campaign
The suspension comes despite David playing a useful supporting role in RCB's title-winning campaign.
The Australian middle-order batter provided finishing firepower throughout the season and was part of the squad that helped Bengaluru secure a second successive IPL title.
However, his repeated disciplinary issues became a recurring subplot during the tournament.
While the offences were all classified as Level 1 breaches, the cumulative effect ultimately resulted in a suspension, making David one of the few players in recent IPL history to receive a ban through the demerit points system.
For RCB, the punishment means they will begin the defence of their IPL crown next season without one of their most experienced finishers available for the opening fixture.
