RCB Blamed for Bengaluru Stampede: CAT Holds Franchise Prima Facie Responsible for Chinnaswamy Tragedy

By MyKhel Staff

In a damning observation that has sent shockwaves across the cricketing world, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has held Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) "prima facie responsible" for the horrifying stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, which left 11 fans dead and hundreds injured.

The tragedy unfolded after RCB-riding high on their first-ever IPL title-announced a victory parade and fan engagement programme without prior coordination with city authorities. According to CAT, the announcement was abruptly made on the morning of June 4, triggering an uncontrollable influx of nearly 2.5 lakh people around MG Road and Cubbon Road. Some estimates placed the crowd size between three to five lakh, creating an administrative nightmare for the city police.

RCB Blamed for Bengaluru Stampede CAT Holds Franchise Prima Facie Responsible for Chinnaswamy Tragedy

"...therefore, prima facie it appears that the RCB is responsible for the gathering of about three to five lakh people. The RCB did not take the appropriate permission or consent from the Police," the CAT stated, laying bare the franchise's recklessness.

RCB's sudden social media post-without police clearance or logistical planning-left law enforcement overwhelmed and helpless. The Tribunal minced no words, delivering a sharp rebuke of RCB's negligent conduct:

"Because of shortage of time on 04.06.2026, the Police was unable to do the appropriate arrangements. Sufficient time was not given to the Police. Suddenly, the RCB created the aforesaid type of nuisance without any prior permission. Police personnel are also human beings. They are neither 'God' (Bhagwan) nor Magician and also not having the magic powers like 'Alladdin ka Chirag' which was able to fulfil any wish only by rubbing a finger."

This scathing remark underscores the depth of institutional frustration, as the police were left scrambling to contain a disaster that could have been averted with basic foresight and responsibility.

Adding to the fallout, charges have already been filed against both RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), with the crisis prompting the resignation of KSCA secretary A. Shankar and treasurer Jayaram.

As the silence from RCB's management continues to fuel public outrage, the franchise's IPL triumph now stands overshadowed by a catastrophic lapse in judgment. What should have been a celebration has morphed into a cautionary tale of hubris, carelessness, and corporate irresponsibility.
