RCB Green Jersey Match: Record And Stats After Meeting With RR In IPL 2023

The Royal Challengers Bangalore registered a 7-run win in the 'Go Green' game of IPL 2023 season on Sunday (April 23) against Rajasthan Royals at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

RCB played in their green jerseys for the first time since 2019 at their actual home venue in Bengaluru after the 2020, 2021 and 2022 season matches were held in different venues behind closed doors or with a limited crowd capacity due to COVID pandemic.

RCB record in green jersey matches

Apart from 2021 season when they sported a special Blue jersey in support of the frontline workers, Royal Challengers Bangalore, have worn a green jersey in one match of an IPL season since 2011.

Why do RCB wear the green jersey?

The 'Go Green' initiative was coined for creating awareness about planting trees and reducing the effect of Global Warming. The skipper of RCB will also present a plant as a memento to the opposition skipper during the toss as part of the special initiative.

The Bangalore-based franchise wears the green jerseys, made of 100 percent recycled materials, only during the afternoon matches. And hence the match against Royals, which took place at 3:30 PM on April 23rd had been picked as the 'Go Green' day.

So far, RCB have played a total of 13 games in the Green Jersey, but possessed a poor record as they have just won four, while one match was abandoned in 2015 against Delhi Capitals due to rain.

RCB first sported the green jersey in the 2011 season against now defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala, whom they defeated by 9 wickets, thanks to the fireworks from opening duo Chris Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan after the bowlers restricted KTK to 128.

Their second win came in 2016 when Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers centuries broke many records, annihilating now defunct Gujarat Lions for a 144 runs victory. Their third win came when they defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 67 runs.

In the their most recent win, Faf Du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell fifties powered RCB to 189 before Harshal Patel held the nerve to concede just 12 runs in the final over.

Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers had the best green jersey match for RCB in IPL

However, RCB have suffered most defeats than wins in the green jersey matches as they have lost 8 of the fixtures played in the special jerseys. RCB have lost to Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders twice, and lost to Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals once.
