Phil Salt and Virat Kohli helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) set their second highest powerplay score in Indian Premier League history during the IPL 2025 season opener in Kolkata on Saturday (March 22).
Salt and Kohli smashed fifties after Krunal Pandya's excellence with the ball as RCB opened their IPL season 18 campaign with a statement 7-wicket victory over defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their own backyard - Eden Gardens.

Salt proved the chief destructor on his debut as RCB ended the first six overs with 80/0, going past their previous joint-second best powerplay total of 79 which came last season against Sunrisers Hyderabad and earlier in 2011 against the now defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala team.
RCB's best score in the first six overs is 92 which came in IPL 2024 against Gujarat Titans at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where Kohli and former captain Faf Du Plessis went hammer and tongs against the GT bowlers. Here is a look at RCB's best powerplay scores so far:
Chasing 175 runs, Salt and Kohli got RCB off to a fast start. Salt scored 49 off 23 balls inside the first six overs when field restrictions were in place, while Kohli added 29 from 13 balls.
Young pacer Vaibhav Arora was at the receiving end of the RCB pair's onslaught, conceding 32 runs in his two overs, while the in-form Varun Chakravarthy was also not spared as the mystery spinner gave away 21 runs in his one over inside the powerplay, which included 3 fours and 1 six.
Kohli and Salt's attack helped RCB post their second highest powerplay score, while the tally is far behind the record held by Sunrisers Hyderabad, who crossed the 100-run mark inside the first six overs twice in 2024. Here is a look at the highest ever totals inside the opening 6 overs in IPL:
