The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has received official approval to host Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 matches at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
This development comes after a thorough review process involving safety audits, structural assessments, and implementation of enhanced crowd management measures, marking a significant step forward for cricket in the city.

The clearance, granted by the Karnataka government following recommendations from an expert committee, allows Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to play five of their home league fixtures at the venue. The stadium is also set to stage key knockout encounters, including the second qualifier and the IPL 2026 final, injecting fresh excitement into the tournament schedule.
The approval follows extensive renovations undertaken by the KSCA to address previous safety concerns. Upgrades include the addition of multiple new entry gates, widening of existing passages, creation of dedicated emergency exit routes, and improved peripheral infrastructure such as additional walkways and holding areas. These enhancements aim to ensure smoother crowd flow, better emergency access, and overall spectator safety during high-attendance events.
The decision ends months of uncertainty surrounding the stadium's availability for elite cricket. Strict conditions accompany the nod, including a reduced spectator capacity, reportedly in the range of 30,000 to 35,000, to prevent overcrowding and maintain high safety standards. Authorities have emphasized that compliance with these guidelines will be monitored closely.
Bengaluru cricket enthusiasts and RCB supporters have welcomed the news enthusiastically, as the Chinnaswamy Stadium returns as a premier host venue. But the defending champions will not play all of their home matches at the venue as they are set to play two home ties at the Veer Narayan Stadium in Raipur. Virat Kohli and co. are set to play the season opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
