RCB vs CSK: Why is pacer Josh Hazlewood not playing tonight against Chennai Super Kings?

By MyKhel Staff

Royal Challengers Bengaluru fans were left surprised ahead of their high-stakes IPL 2025 match against Chennai Super Kings when captain Rajat Patidar announced at the toss that star Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood would not be featuring in the game.

South African speedster Lungi Ngidi was named as his replacement in the playing XI. However, Patidar chose not to elaborate on Hazlewood's exclusion, leaving room for speculation.

RCB vs CSK Josh Hazlewood Injury

"We would have fielded as well. But the wicket will not change that much. We will try to put a good total on the board and keep them under pressure. Everyone is in a good frame of mind and doing their roles, as a captain I am very confident in my boys.

"Till now many players have performed for the team and that is a good sign. We have 4 games and we will try our best in all the games. Every game is important from now, we are not looking at qualification and we will try our best in all four games. One change - Ngidi comes in for Josh," Patidar said at the toss.

While the RCB skipper chose not to provide a reason, former cricketers and experts at the venue were quick to assume the most likely explanation: injury. Ajay Jadeja, speaking on JioHotstar, pointed out that dropping Hazlewood without an injury wouldn't make much sense given his form and value.

"It has to be an injury for Hazlewood, otherwise it doesn't make sense. It will be a mental injury for the team management if he is dropped without injury," Jadeja said candidly.

Josh Hazlewood has been in stellar form this season, sitting second on the wicket-takers list with 18 wickets - just one behind Gujarat Titans' Prasidh Krishna. His ability to strike with the new ball and control the death overs has been crucial to RCB's strong run in the tournament. His absence, especially in a game of such magnitude, raises eyebrows and heightens concerns within the RCB camp.

With the playoff race heating up, RCB cannot afford a slip-up. They currently sit third on the points table, tied on points with table-toppers Mumbai Indians. However, the mid-table competition is intense, and a single loss could shake up the standings. The Bangalore franchise needs to maintain momentum in their final four games, and every selection call, especially involving a bowler of Hazlewood's stature, is under scrutiny.

Meanwhile, CSK are mathematically out of the playoff race, sitting at the bottom of the table with just two wins in 10 matches. They are now playing for pride, but with nothing to lose, they could turn spoilers for teams like RCB looking to secure a playoff berth.

Unless an official update confirms Josh Hazlewood's injury, speculation is bound to continue. But in a game where margins are fine and every decision can tip the balance, RCB will be hoping Ngidi can fill in the void and deliver under pressure.
