RCB vs MI: Mumbai Indians Must Reduce Overdependence on Bumrah, Says Faf du Plessis After Defeat Against Bengaluru

RCB vs MI: Mumbai Indians need to address their growing dependence on Jasprit Bumrah if they are to find consistency in the ongoing Indian Premier League, according to former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis.

MI, known for slow starts in past seasons, have slipped into a slump after winning their opening game, losing three consecutive matches. Their latest setback came against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where they conceded a massive 240 runs but failed to mount a successful chase.

RCB vs MI Mumbai Indians Must Reduce Overdependence on Bumrah Says Faf du Plessis After Defeat Against Bengaluru

Despite being the spearhead of the attack, Bumrah is yet to claim a wicket in four matches this season. Du Plessis highlighted that while Bumrah's overs remain economical, the rest of the bowling unit has struggled to contain runs, especially in high-scoring encounters.

"When you look at that bowling attack, especially in games where totals exceed 250, the key is how much the others concede outside Bumrah's four overs. That's where Mumbai Indians need answers," du Plessis said.

He also stressed the importance of deploying Bumrah strategically during crucial phases rather than relying on him alone to control the innings, particularly against increasingly aggressive batting line-ups.

Sunil Gavaskar Points Out Holes In MI Batting

Echoing similar concerns, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar pointed to MI's struggles in the powerplay. He noted that the team fell short during the chase by failing to maintain the required scoring rate early on.

"They needed at least 12 more runs to stay on track, but even while rotating strike, the required rate kept climbing. Both their batting and bowling in the powerplay are not delivering the control needed," Gavaskar said, referencing comments made by MI skipper Hardik Pandya.

With both batting and bowling concerns evident in the early phase of matches, MI may need to reassess their tactics and personnel to turn their campaign around.
