Ishan Kishan burst onto the IPL scene as a dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman for Mumbai Indians in 2016, quickly establishing himself as one of India's most explosive openers.
Now, entering IPL 2026 with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the Jharkhand star stands on the cusp of etching his name in IPL folklore as the first Indian player to achieve a groundbreaking feat.

After a blockbuster Rs 11.25 crore auction pick-up by SRH last year, the southpaw is set to lead the Sunrisers amid Pat Cummins' absence. The Australian has been ruled out for the first few matches and the Jharkhand star will lead the team. Kishan, who had a stellar T20 World Cup for India as well, now set to create a unique record for his new franchise.
As Ishan Kishan takes the field as SRH captain in the IPL 2026 opener against Rocyal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday (March 28), he will become the youngest Indian player to lead the franchise. Kishan will become the 11th player to captain SRH, and only the 4th Indian in the franchise's history.
At the age of 27 years 253 days, Kishan has toppled the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Manish Pandey as the youngest Indian SRH captain.
And the Indian player has the backing of SRH management, which was echoed in the voice of their head coach Daniel Vettori.
"I think Ishan's been around in the IPL for a long period of time now. He's been with a number of teams and he's been highly successful, so, he brings in his own confidence around that," Vettori said ahead of the IPL 2026 opener on Friday.
"The fact that he's led the U19s and his state team and they won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this year brings a confident person, a confident player and a really confident leader and those are the attributes that we really looked at when he was appointed," he added.
