Referral system to stay, might be extended to ODIs: ICC

By Staff

Mumbai, Oct 16 (UNI) The recently introduced referral system in test cricket is here to stay and will be slowly extended to One Day Internationals (ODI) also, International Cricket Council today indicated.

ICC General Manager Cricket- David Richardson told newsmen here that the referral system under which players can seek the umpires to have a relook at their decisions is still on a trial basis and is yet to stabilise. The system was to ensure that the ground umpires hold the say in such decisions and not the third umpires as is being now followed.

He said the system was most suited for test cricket where the decisions that come under the umpires jurisdiction was more compared to ODIs which were played in a faster pace and doubtful decisions would be fewer in number. However, he did not rule out the possibility of the referral system extended to ODIs also.

Richardson underscored the need for use of technology, especially the visual media to a great extent to ensure that the spirit of the game was not lost.

Richardson was here in connection with the launch of Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Women ranking.
