Rift Between Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami Sparks Debate Amid Shami’s Possible India Team Comeback Nearing

By MyKhel Staff

The alleged rift between Team India captain Rohit Sharma and veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has emerged as a significant talking point during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Reports from Dainik Jagran suggest that the two had a heated exchange over Shami's fitness and availability for Test cricket.

Shami, who underwent ankle surgery earlier this year, missed the IPL and T20 World Cup. He returned to competitive cricket with a seven-wicket haul in the Ranji Trophy against Madhya Pradesh and continued to perform in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).

Despite these performances, Shami has not been included in the Test squad, leading to growing speculation. During the post-match press conference after India's 10-wicket loss to Australia in the second Test, Rohit addressed Shami's potential return.

He said, "We want to be more than 100% sure with him because it has been a long time. We don't want to put pressure on him to come here and do the job for the team. There are some professionals monitoring, we will take a call based on what those guys feel."

However, tensions reportedly flared during a meeting at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, as per Dainik Jagran. The report stated, "When Shami was at NCA, he met Rohit during the 1st Test in Bengaluru."

It added, "During their meeting, the two had a heated exchange over the captain's remark on Shami when asked about his current status and availability for the New Zealand and Australia Test series." Shami had publicly countered reports questioning his fitness, calling them "fake" and reiterating his readiness to play.

In contrast, Rohit, on the eve of the first Test against New Zealand, said, "He recently had a setback-he had a swelling on his knee, which was quite unusual. He was in the process of getting fit-getting close to 100%-and he had a swelling in his knee. That put him back a little bit in his recovery."

India's pace attack, save for Jasprit Bumrah, struggled in the pink-ball Test against Australia, intensifying calls for Shami's inclusion. While Shami's kit has already been sent to Australia, PTI reports that he is likely to be considered for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, subject to final clearance from the NCA.
