From Rishabh Pant to Hardik Pandya: Five IPL Captains Who Could Lose Their Leadership Roles Before IPL 2027
IPL franchises are ruthless when expectations are not met, and IPL 2026 has already placed several high-profile captains under enormous pressure.
As the league heads into its final stretch, a growing number of teams are facing uncomfortable questions around leadership, tactical direction and whether their current captains remain the right long-term fit.

For some franchises, missing the playoffs may not simply trigger squad changes - it could lead to complete captaincy overhauls ahead of IPL 2027.
Here are five IPL captains whose leadership futures suddenly look uncertain.
1. Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants)
No captain enters the second half of IPL 2026 under more pressure than Rishabh Pant.
Lucknow Super Giants spent a record ₹27 crore to sign Pant and trusted him to become the face of the franchise after moving on from KL Rahul. Instead, the season has spiralled into tactical confusion, batting inconsistency and an early elimination from the playoff race.
Pant's own form has mirrored the team's struggles. Constant batting-order changes, questionable tactical calls and a visible lack of stability inside the dressing room have intensified scrutiny around his leadership.
More importantly, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka is not known for patience.
If KL Rahul could effectively be moved aside after one disappointing season, Pant's future as captain suddenly feels far from secure.
Potential replacements: Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh
2. Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians)
Hardik Pandya's captaincy era at Mumbai Indians continues to divide the franchise.
The controversial decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik never fully settled emotionally inside the MI setup, and IPL 2026 has only intensified the discomfort surrounding the transition.
Mumbai's season has been plagued by tactical inconsistency, poor bowling performances and a team that often looks emotionally disconnected during pressure situations.
Hardik himself has also struggled to consistently influence games with either bat or ball.
For perhaps the first time, there is growing belief that MI could genuinely reconsider the leadership structure altogether if the current season ends badly.
Potential replacements: Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah
3. Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings)
Replacing MS Dhoni was always going to be almost impossible. But IPL 2026 has further reinforced how difficult the transition has become for Ruturaj Gaikwad.
CSK have looked tactically uncertain at different stages over the last two seasons, while Gaikwad's own batting appears increasingly affected by captaincy pressure. The side has struggled badly during difficult phases of matches, particularly while chasing large totals or rebuilding after collapses.
What makes the situation even more interesting now is Sanju Samson's arrival inside the CSK setup, giving the franchise another experienced Indian leadership option.
If Chennai fail to recover strongly before the end of the season, difficult conversations may begin.
Potential replacement: Sanju Samson
4. Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals)
Axar Patel's captaincy initially looked like a bold but refreshing gamble from Delhi Capitals.
Instead, IPL 2026 has exposed several of the same problems that hurt DC last season - defensive captaincy under pressure, inconsistent bowling management and a team that fades badly after promising starts.
Delhi once again began the campaign strongly before collapsing midway through the season.
The biggest criticism around Axar has been his inability to aggressively seize momentum during difficult periods of matches. His bowling changes have often appeared reactive rather than proactive, while he himself has struggled to consistently dominate games as captain.
With KL Rahul still inside the squad and several senior players available, DC could be tempted to rethink leadership direction quickly.
Potential replacement: KL Rahul
5. Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals)
Rajasthan Royals took one of the biggest risks of IPL 2026 by moving on from Sanju Samson and handing leadership responsibilities to Riyan Parag.
So far, the gamble has not fully worked.
Parag's tactical decisions have repeatedly come under criticism, especially his bowling management during high-scoring games. Several matches exposed RR's lack of control under pressure, with captaincy decisions often appearing inexperienced during crunch moments.
His own batting numbers have also dipped sharply under the weight of leadership.
The larger problem for RR is that Yashasvi Jaiswal is increasingly emerging as both the franchise's batting superstar and a possible future leadership candidate.
If Rajasthan's season collapses late, Parag's captaincy could quickly come under review.
Potential replacement: Yashasvi Jaiswal
IPL franchises rarely wait long when results disappear
The IPL has never been a league that rewards patience for struggling captains.
Once results begin slipping, leadership conversations accelerate quickly - especially when franchises already possess alternative captaincy options inside their squads.
What makes IPL 2026 particularly fascinating is that several major teams now face not only tactical resets, but also identity crises around who should lead them into the next cycle.
And by the end of the season, some of these captaincy stories may look completely different.
