Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to Bid Adieu to T20Is After T20 World Cup 2024

By MyKhel Staff

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, two stalwarts of Indian cricket, are reportedly set to retire from T20 internationals following their participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

The prestigious tournament is scheduled to take place in the USA and West Indies, marking a significant milestone in their illustrious careers. According to Sports Tak, the World Cup will serve as the final T20I outing for both Sharma and Kohli.

Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli T20 retirement

Rohit Sharma has amassed 4,037 runs in 117 T20Is, while Virat Kohli, a key figure in the squad, has scored 3,974 runs in 151 appearances. Post the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, the duo participated in only one T20I series, highlighting their gradual transition from the shortest format.

The decision comes as both players look to focus more on other formats of the game and manage their workload given their extensive cricketing commitments. Their departure will indeed leave a significant void in the T20 side, considering their vast experience and the pivotal roles they have played over the years.

India's campaign in the World Cup will commence with a match against Ireland, positioned in Group A alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, USA, and Canada. The team aims to progress beyond the group stages into the super 8 rounds, with hopes of capturing the prestigious title.

Rishabh Pant is making a comeback to the international scene after recuperating from a severe car accident. His return is expected to bolster the middle order of the Indian batting lineup. Additionally, with Mohammed Shami sidelined due to injury, Mohammed Siraj will join Jasprit Bumrah at the forefront of India's pace attack. Shivam Dube, recognized for his recent performances, including a series against Afghanistan, has also secured a spot in the squad, showcasing the depth and talent available to the team.

This World Cup not only presents an opportunity for India to claim international glory but also serves as a poignant farewell stage for two of India's most celebrated cricketers, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, whose contributions to the sport have been monumental.
