Rohit Sharma becomes first India captain to create Unique Record after Champions Trophy Victory

By MyKhel Staff

India clinched the ICC Champions Trophy on March 9, 2025, with a four-wicket victory over New Zealand in Dubai.

New Zealand batted first, setting a target of 252 runs, bolstered by Daryl Mitchell's 63 and Michael Bracewell's unbeaten 53. India's spinners, notably Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy, were instrumental in restricting New Zealand's total.

In response, India started strongly with captain Rohit Sharma's commanding 76 runs. Despite a mid-innings wobble, contributions from Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, and an unbeaten 34 from KL Rahul guided India to their target with nine balls to spare.

This triumph marked India's second consecutive global title and reinforced their dominance in white-ball cricket, having won 23 of their last 24 international matches.

India captain Rohit Sharma creates Unique Record

India captain Rohit Sharma has now also become the first Indian captain to win consecutive ICC tournaments. The India skipper is only the second captain to win multiple ICC trophies after MS Dhoni, but Dhoni never won two consecutive ICC titles.

Under MS Dhoni, India won the T20 World Cup in 2007, ICC World Cup in 2011 and Champions Trophy in 2013. But in between those three titles, India failed to win the 2009, 2010 and 2012 T20 World Cups.

Rohit led India to the 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA, thus ending their 17-year wait for the glory. And now, under Rohit Sharma's leadership, India has won the Champions Trophy, with a gap of just nine months between two ICC titles.

The veteran is also set to continue as an India player in the ODI format. There were retirement speculation for Rohit but the 37-year-old dismissed that theory.
