Rohit Sharma can no longer decide his future in Indian cricket, 'Hitman' at the mercy of BCCI officials & selectors

Believe it or not, the big boss of Indian cricket is head coach Gautam Gambhir and not Rohit Sharma. It means, Rohit, who announced that he isn't retiring as yet, can't decide his future plans.

It's going to be the selectors and board officials who are going to take call about Rohit's future, BCCI sources told myKhel on Tuesday.

Rohit Sharma

Murmurs are being heard that some of the top board members aren't in favour of Rohit continuing even as ODI captain forget Test team leadership. Sources insist that Rohit should consider himself lucky if the selectors pick him as captain of the ODI team for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

The toxic dressing room atmosphere has spread so much that even some of the senior functionaries aren't convinced if Rohit should be given a chance to lead the side in a team that has Gambhir with whom he doesn't share a great rapport. "Even Rohit and Hardik Pandya didn't have a great rapport in the dressing room but their equation didn't dampen the spirit of the dressing room. In this case if Rohit and Gambhir are constantly at 'war', it would be tough for Rohit to continue even in ODI cricket," the BCCI source said while explaining the possible shift in leadership.

Rohit, despite his long-standing role as captain, now finds himself in a delicate position where his future as both the ODI and Test captain could be uncertain, given the alleged rift with Gambhir and the growing dissatisfaction among senior board members.

The fact that Gambhir, with his strong opinions and no-nonsense approach, is a dominant figure now, adds fuel to the speculation that Rohit's leadership could be under review, especially with the next generation of leaders like Hardik, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill emerging as contenders.

If the board members are indeed questioning Rohit's future as captain - especially if his rapport with key figures like Gambhir is strained - it could signal a shift in how leadership decisions are being made. The crux of this issue seems to be a toxic atmosphere in the dressing room, which is incredibly damaging for any team, particularly one as high-profile as India's.

"If the team environment remains tense and his leadership is questioned, the BCCI might take a harder stance, with potential leadership changes on the horizon. This internal friction could ultimately shape the future of Indian cricket's leadership," the source added.
