Rohit Sharma fat-shame controversy: Bengal MP makes startling statement of Dropping 'Overweight' India Captain from team while backing Sama Mohamed

By MyKhel Staff

The controversy surrounding Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed's fat-shaming remarks on Rohit Sharma took another turn as Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy openly backed her statement.

On Monday, Roy went a step further, stating that Rohit Sharma "shouldn't even be in the team." Shama Mohamed's comments on social media, where she called Rohit "fat for a sportsperson" and the "most unimpressive captain India has ever had," triggered widespread backlash.

Rohit Sharma overweight fat-shame controversy

The Congress party distanced itself from her remarks and asked her to delete the posts. Mohamed later removed them but defended her stance, asserting that she merely commented on the fitness of a professional athlete.

Saugata Roy Supports Sama Mohamed's Statement

Saugata Roy, while speaking to ANI, backed Mohamed's remarks and questioned Rohit Sharma's place in the Indian team. "This is not about politics, this is about cricket. Scoring a century once in two years and getting out quickly in other matches doesn't justify his place in the team. The Congress leader is correct in saying this. Yes, he is overweight, but people don't seem to care," Roy said.

He further suggested that there are better and fitter options available to lead Team India. "If we talk about a fit and capable captain, there are many new players performing well. If fitness is the issue, someone like Bumrah, if he were fit, could be a great captain. Even Shreyas Iyer could be a potential captain. But Rohit Sharma should not have a place in the team."

Congress Distances Itself from Controversy

Following the uproar, the Congress party issued an official statement clarifying that Mohamed's remarks did not reflect the party's position. Senior leader Pawan Khera released a statement emphasizing the party's respect for Indian cricketers.

"Dr. Shama Mohamed, National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party's position. She has been asked to delete the concerned social media posts from X and has been advised to exercise greater caution in the future," Khera said.

He further reiterated that Congress holds Indian sporting icons in the highest regard and does not support statements that undermine their contributions. With the Champions Trophy 2025 underway, the debate over Rohit Sharma's fitness and leadership continues to spark controversy, adding further scrutiny to his captaincy as India prepares for a crucial knockout match.
