Rohit Sharma was informed that Hardik Pandya would be leading Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2024, just before the start of the World Cup 2023. The Mumbai Indians management held a series of meetings to make Rohit Sharma understand the immediate need of change in captaincy.
An Indian Express report has stated that Rohit Sharma, who was gearing up to lead India in the all-important World Cup 2023, agreed to play under Hardik Pandya and happily left it to the franchise to take calls on the team's future.

The report has also revealed that Hardik Pandya had agreed to return back to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans but only as a leader. After consultations the franchise management agreed to Pandya's wish and later informed Sharma about it during the World Cup.
Weeks after Hardik Pandya's trade from Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians on Friday, December 15, officially announced the appointment of Rohit Sharma as the new captain of Mumbai Indians.
"Ro, In 2013 you took over as captain of MI. You asked us to Believe. In victories & defeats, you asked us to Smile. 10 years & 6 trophies later, here we are. Our forever captain your legacy will be etched in Blue & Gold. Thank you, Captain RO," wrote MI on X, formerly Twitter.
In another statement on Friday, the five-time champions Mumbai Indians said the change in leadership was part of their future planning and thanked Rohit for his exemplary service to the franchise.
