Rohit Sharma Likely to Part Ways with Mumbai Indians Ahead of IPL 2025

By Rishab V M

Rohit Sharma, the current captain of India's ODI and Test teams, is reportedly set to part ways with his long-time IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians, ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Several media outlets suggest that Sharma, who has been a pivotal figure for MI, may make a move to a new team for the upcoming seasons of the lucrative T20 league.

Sharma, who led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles, was controversially removed from the captaincy role before the 2024 season. Hardik Pandya, a fellow Indian cricketer and former MI player, was handed the reins of the team in his place.

This change in leadership fueled speculation and debate among fans and cricket experts alike, with many suggesting that Sharma should seek a fresh start with another franchise.

Despite playing for MI during the 2024 season after the captaincy shift, it appears that the 37-year-old cricketer may now be considering an exit ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

If recent reports are to be believed, Sharma has made up his mind and is unlikely to stay with the Mumbai Indians, a franchise he has been associated with for over a decade.

Rohit Sharma's Glorious IPL Career with Mumbai Indians

Rohit Sharma first made his IPL debut in 2008, representing Deccan Chargers, a now-defunct Hyderabad-based franchise.

In 2011, he was signed by Mumbai Indians for a substantial sum of $2 million, marking the beginning of an iconic era for both the player and the team. Sharma's leadership transformed Mumbai Indians into one of the most successful IPL franchises.

Under his captaincy, MI clinched five IPL titles - in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 - making them the joint-most successful team in IPL history. In addition, Sharma led MI to a Champions League Twenty20 title in 2013, further establishing his legacy as one of the best IPL captains of all time.

Beyond his captaincy, Sharma has also been a prolific run-scorer in the IPL. As of 2024, he remains one of only seven players to have amassed more than 5,000 career runs in the tournament.

However, his removal from the captaincy ahead of the 2024 season sparked a wave of criticism and controversy, with many fans questioning the decision.

As reports of Sharma's potential departure continue to circulate, it seems that the upcoming IPL season may see him donning a new jersey for the first time since 2011, marking the end of an era for both the Mumbai Indians and their celebrated skipper.
