Finally, India captain Rohit Sharma has made it clear that he won't be leaving the ODI format so soon. He likes to continue playing at least till the World Cup 2027. Who would think of retiring after a final match-winning knock against New Zealand?
"I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure that no rumours are spread moving forward," he said almost gleefully after India won the Champions Trophy in Dubai on Sunday night.

Does that mean that he won't leave Test cricket as well? He didn't mention that. Coach Gautam Gambhir wasn't sure if Rohit was the right choice to lead the team for the Champions Trophy because of his lack of form? Rohit, however, proved him wrong and has become a champion captain once again. His confidence is sky-high now.
In other words, he has become a thorn in Gambhir's flesh. The tacit understanding that Rohit would quit automatically after the Champions Trophy is now rendered null and void. Rohit has reached a stage of his career where he doesn't need to be told about his future plan, he already knows about it.
Earlier, he had promised Gambhir to retire in Australia itself and went back on his words that irked the former Delhi cricketer.
Those who think that the dust is settled are wrong but Gambhir is convinced about getting the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal being the opener in ODI cricket for the 2027 World Cup. The problem will arise when Gambhir expects Rohit to be consistent and would prefer to embrace form over reputation.
Therefore, it won't be an easy ride for Rohit either from here on. The only good thing is that he has the support of chief selector Ajit Agarkar and a few other senior cricketers. In addition to this, he has an amazing public relations within the team and even outside, which makes him a powerful man in the Indian team itself.
Besides, there is also a question mark over Rohit continuing as the captain of ODI again, which is again a contentious point for BCCI and its selectors. Even a stalwart like MS Dhoni was also told to give the captaincy to Virat Kohli in 2017. Who is going to be the ODI captain then? This 2025 IPL will decide whether it is Hardik Pandya or Shubman Gill. A former Indian cricketer even named Shreyas Iyer as the new ODI captain too. It's completely intriguing!
