Rohit Sharma Retirement: Former India Captain Likely to Play Final ODI at Lord's vs England – Report
New Delhi, July 16: Rohit Sharma's days in the ODI setup are inching towards an end as the selectors have informed the 'Hitman' that he is not in the scheme of things for the team building for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027. Naturally, the upcoming Lord's test, which will host the 3rd and final ODI, could be the last game in which Rohit Sharna is seen playing for India in the 50-over format.
According to a report by the Indian Express, Rohit is not in the scheme of things, the senior selectors of the board remarked. The Indian selection committee is learnt to have spoken to Sharma alongside coach Gautam Gambhir last week and have laid down their plans going forward.

Subsequently, the selection committee has decided to give youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who have been sitting on the sidelines, the freedom at the top of the order.
"Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour, and they are moving on from him after this series. Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma's court to decide his future," said a BCCI insider, quoted by the Indian Express.
Rohit Sharma is understood to have conveyed his disappointment to a few BCCI officials during India's tour of England after learning about the decision. The veteran opener had already called time on his T20I career on June 29, 2024, shortly after captaining India to the T20 World Cup triumph, before announcing his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, 2025, through an Instagram post ahead of India's England tour.
Following his exit from the longest format, the selectors, in consultation with the team management, shifted their focus towards building a younger core for the future. The move came as several emerging players, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, had spent extended periods on the sidelines despite producing impressive performances, including centuries.
The transition had begun earlier in the ODI setup as well, with the selection committee deciding to appoint Shubman Gill as India's new captain in the 50-over format, bringing an end to Sharma's tenure at the helm.
