Rohit Sharma returns to form with 28-ball fifty ahead of T20 World Cup in his 'last innings for Mumbai Indians'

Rohit Sharma returned to form in his last innings of IPL 2024 by hitting a 28-ball fifty for Mumbai Indians in the match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Saturday, May 17. Some fans celebrated his comeback to form ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, while others reckoned that he was making his last appearance for MI iconic.

There have been speculations that the 37-year-old former captain of Mumbai Indians (MI) might leave the five-time champions after the season. He was unceremoniously sacked from captaincy after Hardik Pandya was traded from Gujarat Titans, and named the new Mumbai Indians captain ahead of the ongoing IPL 2024 season.

The fifty-plus score from Rohit is first in last eight outings which has seen him cross the 20-run mark only once. Rohit Sharma's scores in his last seven outings before the blazing knock against Lucknow at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai were - 19, 4, 11, 4, 8, 6, 36.

Despite his off-coloured season, Rohit Sharma (417) emerged as the leading run-scorer for Mumbai Indians. During the course of the innings, the opener surpassed Tilak Varma's tally of 416 runs for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024.

Shrugging off his poor form ahead of the all important T20 World Cup 2024 next month, the Indian captain smashed seven fours and three sixes en route to his fifty. The star batter looked in his elements and timed the ball with utmost class and perfection. Mumbai were chasing 215 in the match.

Mumbai Indian became the first team to be eliminated from the IPL 2024 playoffs race last week. But the 68-run knock off 38 balls from Rohit Sharma gave MI fans something to cheer on the last day of their team's campaign.

Rohit Sharma was dismissed on a Ravi Bishnoi delivery on the fifth ball of the 11th over. He was looking to carve the ball over cover, but a thick outside edge landed into the hands of Mohsin Khan at short third man. The fans at Wankhede gave Rohit a standing ovation as he walked back to the pavilion with a lot of disappointment on his face.

Mumbai lost the match by 18 runs and finished at the bottom of 10-team points table for second time in three years.
