Rohit Sharma’s Stand at Wankhede: How His Parents Overcame Struggles to Raise the ‘Hitman’ - Tribute to Their Sacrifices

Rohit Sharma Stand at Wankhede: His parents, Gurunath and Purnima Sharma, are not the just names behind a famous cricketer; they are the pillars behind a journey built on resilience, quiet hardship, and selfless sacrifice. On 16 May, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) honoured Hitman by inaugurating a stand in his name at Wankhede Stadium.

Present were political dignitaries like CM Devendra Fadnavis and Sharad Pawar, but the most meaningful presence came from his family. Sharma invited his parents on stage for the unveiling, marking a deeply emotional moment that echoed louder than applause.

Rohit Sharma s Stand at Wankhede

From growing up in a one-room home in Dombivli to watching their son etch his name among cricket’s giants, the journey of the Sharma family is a quiet storm of persistence. Rohit’s gratitude was simple (Live Mint): “What is going to happen today, I have never dreamed of.”

Honouring Sharma at Wankhede

The Mumbai Cricket Association held a ceremony on 16 May to inaugurate a newly named stand at Wankhede Stadium after Sharma. The moment was made more intimate as Sharma stood beside his parents, Gurunath and Purnima, during the unveiling. He also acknowledged the significance of the honour during his speech, stating,

“As a kid growing up, I wanted to play for Mumbai, for India. No one thinks of this. For me to have my name amongst the greats of the game… I cannot express it in words.”

Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis were present at the event, along with Sharma’s wife Ritika and other family members.

The Journey from Dombivli to Wankhede

Sharma’s roots trace back to modest beginnings. Born in Nagpur on April 30, 1987, he was raised in Dombivli, a far-flung suburb of Mumbai, where his father, Gurunath, worked as a storehouse caretaker for a transport firm. The family of four, including his younger brother Vishal, lived in a cramped single-room apartment. Financial limitations were constant, but what they lacked in wealth, they replaced with quiet determination.

His mother, Purnima, originally from Visakhapatnam, shared how proud she was of her son’s 137-run knock against Bangladesh in the 2015 World Cup. It’s also her love for the number 45 that prompted Rohit to wear it on his jersey throughout his international career.

A Personal Life Rooted in Love and Loyalty

Ritika Sajdeh, now Ritika Sharma, has been Rohit’s partner since 2015. The two met during a shoot in 2008 where she was managing the event. Despite being introduced as Yuvraj Singh’s rakhi sister, Ritika and Rohit formed a quiet bond over the years. He later revealed on Breakfast with Champions that they dated for six years before tying the knot.

Their marriage produced two children: Samaira, born December 30, 2018, and Ahaan, born on November 15, 2024. The arrival of their son was shared in a unique FRIENDS-themed Instagram post, reflecting the couple’s playful and personal side.

Brother by Side, Always

Sharma’s younger brother Vishal, who is married to Dipali Shinde, remains a quieter presence in the public eye. Still, he has always stood behind Rohit. The bond between the siblings may not make headlines, but it’s foundational to Rohit’s sense of identity and family.

For Sharma, the honour of a stand in his name is not just a personal achievement; it’s a shared recognition of his parents' sacrifices. From a one-room home to cricket’s highest stage, Gurunath and Purnima Sharma’s perseverance shaped the boy who would become India's beloved Hitman. And as the crowd at Wankhede chanted his name, one thing was clear: the real tribute wasn’t just to a cricketer, but to the family who carried him there.
