Rohit Sharma Test Retirment: The Hitman's 'self-promotion' doesn't go well with BCCI officials & selectors

Only a few days ago, Rohit Sharma was talking about his fast bowlers' fitness and form without talking much about his own standing within the team. He spoke at length about his role as captain in England without the selectors or BCCI vetoing him as the Test leader.

He went on and on while discussing the England series and remained super confident after his Champions Trophy win as a captain that he would lead India in England. He even spoke about it with some of the top brass of BCCI, who had no option.

However, seeing how Rohit was batting in the initial part of IPL 2025, it was clear that it would be nothing short of an embarrassment if he had to bat in England. The whispers within the selection committee eventually became a talking point. Some of the board officials were not happy with the eerie interviews Rohit was doing with a bunch of 'cheerleaders'.

Even those in BCCI who followed the logic of saying no to a captain who has won two ICC trophies within a year, couldn't say much after the selectors placed their side of the story. Ultimately, it's also a huge embarrassment for Rohit to leave Test cricket the way he did.

Some still believe that he could have done this in Australia itself rather than prolonging this announcement for such a long time. Rohit also lost the moral right to captain a side from which he was dropped from the playing XI. The writing was on the wall when Indian coach Gautam Gambhir dropped captain Rohit from the playing XI in the Sydney Test.

And all that happened - because India are embarking on a new WTC cycle and the team needs a strong leader who is performing well in Test cricket, which Rohit wasn't. With the selectors now left with two options to choose between Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul after Rohit's retirement, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the other two future options this Indian team could stand to gain, which is a good news.

But the bad news is that Rohit won't be seen in whites again for India!
