Rohit Sharma set to be Removed as India Captain? MI star may not Lead India for England Tests - Reports

By MyKhel Staff

Rohit Sharma has been under the pump for his lack of form across all formats, and a latest development indicates the veteran may lose Test captaincy.

As per a report from the Indian Express, Rohit is tipped to lose his captaincy in the Test format as selectors are looking to move on from the veteran. It is being said that Rohit may be removed from his leadership role as early as the India-England Tests, which are to start from June 20.

The national selectors are in unison to move on from Rohit Sharma as the leader, which has stemmed mainly from his lack of form in the Red ball cricket. The 38-year-old had a torrid outing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and has been going through a topsy-turvy journey in the IPL as well.

"The selectors' thought process is clear. They want a new leader for the England tour and Rohit doesn't fit in as a captain, especially considering his red-ball form. They want to groom a young leader for the next Test cycle and the selection committee has informed the BCCI that Rohit won't lead the team," a BCCI source was quoted by the Indian Express.

The selectors had a meeting and discussed Rohit's form and they have put their proposal to BCCI. It is likely that the Indian board won't interfere in the decision. The selectors' apprehension comes from Rohit's poor outing with the bat, and they are not confident of keeping him as captain amid this woeful form. As a specialist batter, Rohit can be left out if he fails to perform, but things will complicate if he remains captain.

It is reported that Rohit may still be on the flight for England but maybe only as a specialist batter. Along with that, he is still considered as an important part of the ODI setup and will continue to lead the Indian team in the 50-over format.
