Thanks to Chase's maiden Test hundred, West Indies drew the match on Wednesday (August 3) at Sabina Park. India lead the four-match series 1-0 after winning the opening Test by an innings and 92 runs.

24-year-old Chase, playing in only his 2nd Test, scored 137 off 269 balls as West Indies frustrated India on the fifth and final day. They had started the day struggling at 48/4, still 256 runs behind.

Chase's fighting ton and half centuries from Shane Dowrich (74) and captain Jason Holder (64 not out) helped West Indies draw the contest which they had almost lost. They ended their second innings at 388/6 in 108 overs.

West Indies, who batted first, were dismissed for a paltry 196 and India piled up 500/9 declared after centuries from KL Rahul (158) and Ajinkya Rahane (108 not out).

Having taking 5/121 in 36.1 overs with his off-spin in India's first innnigs, Chase joined West Indies great Sir Garfield Sobers in an elite company.

It was way back in 1966 that a West Indies player had taken 5 wickets and scored a century in the same Test. Then, Sobers had scored 174 and took 5/41 against England in Headingley, Leeds as they won by an innings and 55 runs. That match was exactly played 50 years ago to this day (August 4).

Overall, Chase is the 4th West Indies to achieve the double of 5 wickets and a hundred in same Test. Sobers did it twice (1962 Vs India, Kingston and 1966) while Denis Atkinson (1955 Vs Australia, Bridgetown) Collie Smith (1959 Vs India, Delhi) achieved once each. Atkinson had scored a double ton (219).

As in the case of Sobers, who won both batsman and bowler of the match awards, Chase too took the Man-of-the-match honours for his all-round effort.

India and West Indies teams move to Gros Islet (St. Lucia) to play the third Test from August 9.
