RR vs CSK: Who is Brijesh Sharma? J&K Pacer defies the Odds, Makes IPL Debut for Rajasthan Royals

By MyKhel Staff

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) continued their tradition of unearthing hidden gems as they handed a debut cap to Jammu & Kashmir pacer Brijesh Sharma in their IPL 2026 season opener against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Picked at his base price of Rs 30 lakh during the auction, Sharma's inclusion in the playing XI at the expense of more established names has sparked immediate interest among the cricketing fraternity.

Who is Brijesh Sharma?

Brijesh Sharma is a 27-year-old right-arm medium-fast bowler hailing from the Dandial area of Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir. Standing tall with a natural ability to generate bounce, Sharma has long been a known name in the local circuits of J&K, representing the state at the Under-19 and Under-25 levels. However, his path to the biggest T20 league in the world was anything but conventional.

Journey from Udhampur to the IPL

Growing up as the son of a labourer, Brijesh faced significant financial hurdles while pursuing his dream. In search of better facilities and tougher competition, he moved to Delhi to train under the tutelage of renowned coach Deepak Punia at the Unique Sports Club.

Despite his talent, the "big break" eluded him in traditional domestic structures. It was his decision to play in the 2025 Bengal Pro T20 League that changed his fortunes. Representing Smashers Malda at the iconic Eden Gardens, Brijesh finished as the joint-fifth highest wicket-taker, claiming 11 wickets in just seven matches. His ability to bowl effectively both in the Powerplay and at the death caught the eyes of the Rajasthan Royals scouts.

Following the Footsteps of Umran Malik

By making his debut today, Brijesh joins an elite list of J&K cricketers like Umran Malik, Abdul Samad, and Auqib Nabi who have successfully transitioned to the IPL. On a night where the Royals won the toss and elected to bowl against a Ruturaj Gaikwad-led CSK, all eyes will be on the Udhampur lad to see if he can replicate his Bengal Pro T20 heroics on the grandest stage of them all.
