Rajasthan Royals (RR) suffered a blow in their last outing in IPL 2025 after skipper Sanju Samson was forced to retire hurt during the run chase against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Wednesday (April 16) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
Samson, who played the first three matches of the season as a batter and an impact player, resumed captaincy role after the Indian wicketkeeper-batter was cleared by the BCCI Centre of Excellence cleared him to keep wickets, having fully recovered from a finger surgery.

Post his captaincy return, RR had registered one win, two defeats and most recently suffered a super over loss after a tied result in which his team was well on course for victory, but brilliant bowling display from Mitchell Starc tilted the tie in Delhi Capitals' favour.
It was also during the clash against DC that Samson had to leave the field hurt after scoring 31 off 19 balls. The 30-year-old looked uncomfortable after trying to play a cut shot off Vipraj Nigam and was seen holding his left side near the ribs. Although he faced one more delivery, he soon walked off the field.
Following the match, Samson had told the broadcasters, "It feels alright. I was just not ready to come back and bat here. We'll observe it tomorrow and see how it is." While that looked positive, there seems to be a negative update on his participation in RR's next game. Here is the latest Samson fitness update:
Sanju Samson injury update: Samson might miss Rajasthan Royals' next game against Lucknow Super Giants as the team is waiting for scan results on a possible side injury as revealed by the team's head coach Rahul Dravid.
"Sanju experienced a bit of pain in the abdominal area," head coach Dravid had said on the eve of the RR vs LSG match, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. "So we have gone for scans. He has done some scans today (Friday, April 18) so we are waiting the results of those scans.
"And then once we get a bit more clarity around the scans and the severity of [the injury] we'll take a decision going forward and we'll see what happens," he added. That was the update provided on the eve of the match. So, the captain could still play if the results from the scans are positive.
If Samson misses out, then Riyan Parag, who led the team in the first three matches of the season, is likely to captain RR in the absence of their regular skipper. Also, Dhruv Jurel is expected to takeover wicketkeeping duties.
Under Parag's captaincy, RR lost their first two matches to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) but bounced back with a win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Guwahati. They then defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) but went on to lose the next three games. RR currently sit eighth on the points table.
