Ruturaj Gaikwad may not have arrived with the aura of a superstar successor to MS Dhoni, but the right-handed batter has quietly grown into the role since taking over the captaincy in 2024. Leading Chennai Super Kings through a phase of transition, Gaikwad has provided much-needed stability to a leadership setup that once revolved heavily around Dhoni.
Interestingly, rather than trying to emulate his predecessor, Gaikwad has carved his own identity as a calm and composed leader. "I'm not looking to fill Mahi bhai's shoes. I'm going to try and bring my own shoes," his famous response to Ravi Shastri when he took over captaincy from Dhoni in 2024.

His measured approach, both as a captain and a top-order batter, has helped bring balance to the side, easing the burden of constant captaincy shifts. In doing so, he has emerged as a steady anchor for CSK, guiding the team through a crucial rebuilding phase with maturity and assurance. Although he was sidelined from the squad last year due to an elbow injury, the CSK captain is fit and ready to go at it from the word go.
The right-hander will begin the IPL 2026 against the Rajasthan Royals. In the last season of IPL, Ruturaj Gaikwad had scored around 63 runs off 44 balls in the only game that he played against the Royals before being sidelined from the match due to an elbow injury.
