The stage is set for what promises to be a blockbuster SA20 Season 4 Auction, following the official announcement of retained and pre-signed players by the league’s six franchises.
With a fresh auction purse, strategic wildcards, and a star-studded pool of available talent, anticipation for the 9 September event in Johannesburg is running high.

Each franchise was allowed to retain or pre-sign up to six players—split evenly between a maximum of three South Africans and three overseas stars—during the recently concluded retention window, which closed on 18 July. To further refine their squads, teams also completed six Wildcard signings. For Season 4, Wildcard players could include any overseas cricketer or a South African who featured in their Season 3 squad.
With a combined auction purse of USD 7.4 million, the six franchises are now focused on filling 84 available slots. The auction is widely anticipated as an opportunity for strategic resets and high-impact signings, particularly with the quality of names set to go under the hammer.

Some of South Africa’s top cricketing talents will be available at this year’s auction, including World Test Championship final standouts Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi, Wiaan Mulder, and Keshav Maharaj. The list also features emerging stars like Dewald Brevis and Kwena Maphaka, alongside T20 specialists Quinton de Kock, Anrich Nortje, and Tabraiz Shamsi—heightening intrigue among fans and franchises alike.
SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith highlighted the strategic framework behind Season 4’s roster build.
“When the League first drafted its regulations in Season 1, we always saw this forthcoming season as an opportunity for a strategic reset — and this is exactly where we envisioned being. There’s now a strong balance between pre-signed and retained international and Proteas players, alongside a significant purse available for the auction,” he said.
With the groundwork laid, excitement continues to build as franchises and fans alike await the next chapter in the SA20’s evolution—a fiercely competitive auction that could reshape the league landscape.
