In a thrilling display of cricket, MI Cape Town (MICT) dazzled fans with a remarkable 97-run triumph over the reigning champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape, marking an impressive beginning to their Betway SA20 Season 3 campaign.
The clash, held at the packed St George's Park on Thursday (January 9), was anticipated by many but ended in dismay for the local supporters as MICT showcased a commanding performance that took everyone by surprise.

Dewald Brevis, a spark in the MICT lineup, played a pivotal role in setting up the victory. He delivered an explosive inning of 57 runs off just 29 balls, including two fours and six towering sixes, propelling MICT to a formidable total of 174/7.
Brevis' performance was particularly noteworthy as he had previously shown glimpses of his potential in the very first match of the competition two seasons ago at Newlands. His ability to tackle the spin duo of Simon Harmer and Liam Dawson, and then hitting back-to-back sixes off Beyers Swanepoel's bowling, exemplified his growing stature in the game.
The MICT bowlers were equally impressive, with Delano Potgieter and Trent Boult leading the charge. Potgieter achieved career-best figures of 5/10, while Boult (2/16) was instrumental with his new-ball spell, including a double-wicket maiden in the third over.
Boult's skill in swinging the ball proved too much for Sunrisers' batters, including England Test opener Zak Crawley. This performance highlighted Boult's significance not only for MICT but also as a valuable asset to the entire league, promising great entertainment across venues in South Africa.
MICT's victory was historic as it marked their first win against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in five encounters since the Betway SA20's inception. The win was further sweetened by a spectator, Christopher Moolman, catching one of Brevis' sixes one-handed, earning the first entry into the Betway Catch R2-million competition for Season 3.
Despite losing Brevis in the final overs, MICT maintained their momentum thanks to Potgieter and George Linde, who put together an unbroken partnership of 41 runs. Their collaboration, especially taking 24 runs off Marco Jansen's last over, swung the game decisively in MICT's favor.
Looking ahead, MICT aims to continue their winning streak against the Joburg Super Kings at the Wanderers on Saturday. Meanwhile, Sunrisers Eastern Cape will be keen to redeem themselves against the Paarl Royals at Boland Park, with both matches scheduled for the same day. This opening victory sets a high bar for MICT in the season, signaling their intent to be serious contenders for the title.
