New Delhi, Oct 8: Teenage South African all-rounder Jason Rowles emerged as the biggest buy of the SA20 Season 5 Player Auction, with Joburg Super Kings securing the highly rated 18-year-old for Rs 2.90 million (Rs 1.69 crore) in a bidding battle that underlined the growing value of emerging local talent.

The auction, held in Johannesburg on Wednesday, saw the four remaining franchises complete their squads ahead of the fifth edition of the South African T20 league. Alongside established international stars, several promising young players drew significant interest, with Rowles ultimately becoming the day's standout purchase.

Rowles, who has represented South Africa Under-19s, has already impressed in the longer format, including appearances against England Under-19s. A technically sound batter who also bowls left-arm spin, he has a double century and several half-centuries to his name. His youth-level performances have made him one of South Africa's most promising prospects.

Joburg Super Kings beat competition from MI Cape Town to land Rowles. His Rs 2.90 million price tag also made him the most expensive player at the auction, ahead of the Rs 2.70 million spent by JSK to bring back former Proteas captain Faf du Plessis.

42-Year-Old Du Plessis Attracts Bidders

Besides Rowles, 42-year-old du Plessis attracted considerable interest during the auction, with JSK and MI Cape Town involved in a bidding contest before the veteran batter returned to the Wanderers. He has been associated with the franchise throughout the first four SA20 seasons and will now continue his stint with the Super Kings.

JSK also added another T20 veteran in West Indies great Kieron Pollard, who was bought for R1.50 million. The 39-year-old all-rounder brings vast experience to the squad, having amassed nearly 15,000 runs and taken 341 wickets in T20 cricket. His power-hitting and experience in high-pressure situations are expected to strengthen the Super Kings' campaign.

Reflecting on the auction, SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith said the event showcased the league's ability to bring together established international stars and South Africa's emerging talent.

"This year's auction showed exactly what SA20 has become. It's become a home where world-class players like Faf du Plessis, Shimron Hetmyer and Trent Boult sit alongside South Africa's brightest young talent," Smith said.

He singled out Rowles' purchase as a major highlight, adding that seeing an 18-year-old trigger the biggest bidding battle demonstrated the confidence franchises have in the country's next generation.

"Jason Rowles was the highlight of the day for me. Seeing an 18-year-old spark the biggest bidding battle of the day tells you how much the franchises believe in the next generation," Smith said.

JSK further signed Proteas all-rounder Dayyaan Galiem for R200,000, Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani for R500,000 and USA wicketkeeper-batter Andries Gous for R1 million. England all-rounder Jamie Overton, who is also part of Chennai Super Kings, was added as JSK's wildcard selection.

MI Cape Town were among the most active franchises, securing Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for R2.60 million and West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer for R1.50 million. New Zealand fast-bowling great Trent Boult and young South African Oliver Whitehead were also added as the franchise strengthened its pace resources.

Pretoria Capitals brought in former Proteas batter Rassie van der Dussen for R500,000, adding experience to their batting department. Proteas Test and ODI captain Temba Bavuma will also return to the franchise as they look to improve on their runners-up finish from last season.

Three-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape completed their 19-player squad with Proteas left-arm seamer Nandre Burger and England all-rounder Craig Overton. They will join an already formidable pace attack featuring Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, Adam Milne and Lutho Sipamla.

Smith also stressed the importance of the SA20's relationship with South African cricket, saying, "It's also really pleasing to see so many Proteas players being picked up today. A strong League and a strong national team go hand in hand, and today was a good example of that."

The fifth season of the SA20 will begin on January 17, 2027, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape hosting Pretoria Capitals at St George's Park in Gqeberha in a repeat of last season's final.
