SA20 Chief Graeme Smith believes Dinesh Karthik will add tournament's appeal, confirms playoff venues

By MyKhel Staff

SA20 League Commissioner and former South African captain Graeme Smith is thrilled about the upcoming third season of South Africa's premier T20 league.

A significant highlight of this season is Dinesh Karthik's participation, marking the first time an Indian player will compete in the tournament. Karthik, who will represent Paarl Royals, is seen as a valuable addition, bringing international appeal and enhancing the league's competitive edge.

SA20 League

Smith emphasized the league's goal of showcasing world-class talent, highlighting the presence of players like Ben Stokes, Kane Williamson, Jonny Bairstow, Devon Conway, and Rashid Khan. He expressed excitement about Karthik's inclusion, noting that his presence would further attract cricket fans globally, especially from India, a key audience for SA20.

"You know, he's come off a seriously successful IPL. And I know that, along with the Ben Stokes and the Rashid Khans and all the other world-class players coming, there's going to be a lot of interest to see these types of players playing in South Africa, which is terrific for us. I mean, obviously, Dinesh is an outstanding keeper batsman, middle-order batsman, wicket-keeper," Smith said to Times of India.

Since its inception, SA20 has gained immense popularity, with nearly 380,000 fans attending games last season. The involvement of six IPL franchises has significantly boosted the league, enhancing both its entertainment value and the quality of cricket in South Africa. Smith believes that SA20 has played a crucial role in strengthening the domestic cricket scene and growing a dedicated fan base in the country.

SA20 Playoffs Venue Finalized

Looking ahead, Smith outlined plans for this season's play-offs, which will be hosted across three venues: St. George's Park in Gqeberha, Centurion, and the Wanderers in Johannesburg, the latter of which will stage the final on February 8. He stressed the importance of rotating venues to offer diverse experiences and expand opportunities for different stadiums.

Smith also touched on SA20's commitment to nurturing young talent through initiatives like the Schools SA20 program, which will engage over 500 schools and host over 1,000 matches for boys and girls. This grassroots effort, combined with the rookie draft system, is part of the league's strategy to invest in the future of cricket.

SA20 will continue to occupy its January-February window, aligning with South Africa's summer cricket calendar and leveraging the excitement generated by major international tours.
