SA20 team Paarl Royals create History in T20 Cricket - No Team has Ever done it Before!

By MyKhel Staff

Paarl Royals, a team in the South African franchise tournament SA20, have created history with a unique display.

Paarl Royals became the first team in the history of T20 cricket to bowl the entirety of 20 overs through spinners, which they did in an SA20 match on Saturday (January 25) against Pretoria Capitals.

Royals, known for their buoyant spin attack, bowled the entire match with spinners. In the match, the Paarl outfit batted first and scored 140 runs. On a very slow deck, the total was over par and Royals captain David Miller identified his bowling tactics.

Five spinners, 20 Overs for Paarl Royals

Five spin bowlers were handed the duties of bowling and they executed the plans perfectly. Bjorn Fortuin, Nqabayomzi Peter, Joe Root, Mujeeb ur Rahman and Dunith Wellalage bowled four overs each as Royals defended the modest total and won the match by 11 runs.

Fortuin, Mujeeb and Root got two wickets each while Wellalage had one wicket to his name. This is the first time in T20 cricket's history that the entire 20 overs have been bowled by spinners.

Paarl Royals captain David Miller was ecstatic with the victory and thanked his bowlers for their excellent implementation while defending the total.

"For me personally I have never seen that (20 overs of spin) and to be part of this is great. We did have Galiem as the pace option but luckily we bowled second. It's about doing the simple things and controlling the controllables. Bowlers stepped up at crucial moments," Miller said at the post-match presentation.

The win was also Royals' fifth consecutive one as they sit at the top of the points table with 24 points in seven matches.
