The excitement surrounding the Betway SA20 continues to grow as the highly anticipated Rookie Draft returns for Season 3, offering six young South African cricketers a potentially life-changing opportunity.

With the draft scheduled for October 1 in Cape Town, these budding stars will hope to secure their spot in one of the premier T20 franchises.

After its successful introduction in Season 2, the Rookie Draft will once again be integrated into the main player auction, reflecting the depth and rising talent within South African cricket. This season, 89 young players have registered for the draft, all eager to make their mark on one of the world's most competitive T20 stages.

The Rookie initiative, which proved to be a game-changer in its previous iteration, continues to build a pipeline for South African cricket talent. Five of the six Rookies selected last year, along with two replacement Rookies, have been retained by their respective teams for the upcoming season, underlining the impact these youngsters have had.

Stephen Cook, Head of Cricket Operations for Betway SA20, expressed the league's continued commitment to nurturing young talent. "The Rookie player was an overwhelming success story from Season 2, with many great stories coming from it," Cook said.

"Seeing young players getting opportunities to be exposed to some of the best players and coaches in the world is very encouraging and bodes well for the development of the South African player pipeline."

SA20 Success Stories from Season 2

Several players have already reaped the benefits of the Rookie Draft. Paarl Royals' leg-spinner, Nqaba Peter, highlighted how his experience accelerated his development, leading to his inclusion in the Proteas Men's T20I and ODI squads.

"In the change-room, there's Lungi (Ngidi), Andile (Phehlukwayo), (Tabraiz) Shamsi ... guys I watched on TV. I don't know if there's a word to describe how it really feels to be around them. I had some mentorship from these guys. It's definitely an experience every cricketer should have," Peter reflected.

Andile Simelane, an all-rounder for Sunrisers Eastern Cape, shared a similar sentiment. "It was something special for me to get a chance to work with the best coaches and overseas players. I worked with Dale Steyn, who added a few things to my bowling. It's something I will never forget."

For MI Cape Town's Connor Esterhuizen, playing alongside stars like Rassie van der Dussen was a boyhood dream come true. "It was awesome to see how they go about their business. My teammates were unbelievable, and there was a great bond."

89 Players in Line for Draft Selection

This year, a total of 89 young cricketers have registered for the draft, including notable names such as South Africa U19 fast bowler Tristan Luus, Western Province all-rounder Abdallah Bayoumy, North West wicketkeeper-batter Meeka-eel Prince, South Africa U19 captain Juan James, and SA Emerging XI batter Dewan Marais. These players will compete for a coveted spot in one of the six SA20 franchises.

SA20 2025 Rookie Draft Explained

A Rookie is defined as a South African player aged 22 or under on the day of the auction and who has not previously been contracted to an SA20 team. Each of the six teams is mandated to select a player from the Rookie Draft, which takes place at the end of the regular auction.

If a player is not chosen during the regular auction, they become eligible for the Rookie Draft, where teams will have two minutes to make their selections. Each Rookie player carries a fixed salary of R75,000, which is deducted from the team's salary cap ahead of the auction to ensure clarity.

If a team already has a player in their squad who qualifies as a Rookie, they are still required to select another player from the draft. This provision ensures that all franchises provide opportunities to young talents.
