Sandeep Patil Reveals Why Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh Were Phased Out
Former India chief selector Sandeep Patil has explained why cricketing greats Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir and Zaheer Khan had to leave the national team during a crucial period of transition, insisting that the selection committee prioritised the future of Indian cricket over personal relationships.

Speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan, Patil, who chaired the selection panel between 2012 and 2016, reflected on the difficult decisions involved in moving on from a generation of World Cup-winning players as Indian cricket prepared for its next phase.
Patil emphasised that the decisions were not his alone, noting that a five-member selection panel collectively assessed the team's needs and long-term direction.
"First of all, I want to make it clear: I wasn't the only one making these decisions. There was a selection panel of five, and I was its chairman. Whatever decisions we made, we made with the future of Indian cricket in mind," Patil said.
"It feels very bad to bring this up today, but legends as great as Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, and Zaheer Khan had to leave the team or retire. They know the reasons. Our job as selectors was to put the interests of the country, the BCCI, and Indian cricket first."
Sandeep Patil on the Challenge of Moving on From Legends
Patil acknowledged the emotional difficulty of overseeing the departures of players who had made significant contributions to Indian cricket. However, he maintained that selection decisions had to be guided by the team's interests rather than personal loyalties.
The former India batter stressed that familiarity or friendship with a player could not influence decisions about team selection, particularly when selectors were entrusted with planning for the future.
"You can be friends with players, but there has to be a line. You can't say, 'He is my friend, so I will pick him for the team.' When you are given this responsibility, you have to take it seriously," he said.
"You are not thinking about your own cricket; you are thinking about India's cricket and its future. You sometimes have to make decisions you are not happy with, but you make them for the good of the Indian team."
A Crucial Transition Period for Indian Cricket
Patil's tenure as chairman of selectors coincided with a period in which India had to make way for a new generation after years of relying on established stars. Tendulkar, Gambhir, Yuvraj and Zaheer were among the prominent names whose international careers came to an end during this broader transition.
Patil's comments underline the responsibility faced by selectors in balancing the achievements of senior players with the need to build a team capable of sustaining success. He made it clear that such decisions could be uncomfortable, but argued that the national team's long-term interests had to take precedence.
While Patil did not disclose the specific reasons behind the exit of each player, his remarks offered insight into the selection committee's approach during a defining phase for Indian cricket.
