Saim Ayub set to miss Champions Trophy? PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi gives Crucial Update

By MyKhel Staff

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet to name the squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, which is set to start from February 19.

Pakistan, being the host of the tournament, is expected to make a strong mark, but the team is yet to be picked.

Amid this, star batter Saim Ayub's injury has created doubt over his participation. The southpaw suffered an ankle problem which has jeopardized his chances in the ICC competition.

But PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has assured fans that Saim Ayub's recovery from his ankle injury is progressing as expected. During his visit to the United States, Naqvi revealed that Ayub's plaster is likely be removed within the next two days.

Naqvi reaffirmed the PCB's focus on the long-term well-being of its players, stating, "I am in constant touch with the team regarding his condition, and I will not risk his future for a single event."

Ayub sustained the injury on the opening day of the Cape Town Test against South Africa. Following consultations with London-based doctors, surgery was ruled out, and the opener has been prescribed six weeks of rest. The doctors have expressed confidence that Ayub can achieve full fitness through a structured rehabilitation plan.

The PCB chairman noted that once the plaster is removed, Ayub will transition into the recovery phase, including a thorough rehabilitation process to ensure he regains complete fitness. His selection for Champions Trophy will only be sanctioned after medical clearance.

Meanwhile, the PCB is in the final stages of preparing the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. Sources indicate the proposed lineup features prominent players, including Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan. Fakhar Zaman is also set to make a return, while Shadab Khan is likely to be snubbed.

Naqvi emphasized the importance of waiting for Ayub's medical reports before finalizing the squad.

"We will ensure his complete recovery before considering him for selection," he added.

The PCB's selection committee has reportedly finalized the roster, which is now awaiting Naqvi's approval. The board remains committed to ensuring the team fields a competitive and fully fit squad for the high-profile tournament.
