Sanjay Manjrekar Criticizes Gautam Gambhir in Front of Media, Urges BCCI to Rethink His Press Role

By MyKhel Staff

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar took to social media to express his disapproval of Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir's media approach, following Gambhir's pre-departure press conference on Monday. The press interaction, held in Mumbai ahead of India's five-Test series against Australia, saw Gambhir address numerous contentious topics.

These included India's recent loss to New Zealand, Virat Kohli's form, and the potential transition phase in Indian cricket. However, Manjrekar was not impressed with Gambhir's responses or his overall conduct. Using X (formerly Twitter), Manjrekar shared his concerns with a pointed critique.

He wrote, "Just watched Gambhir in the press conference. May be wise for @BCCI to keep him away from such duties, let him work behind the scenes. He does not have the right demeanor nor the words when interacting with them. Rohit & Agarkar, much better guys to front up for the media."

Manjrekar's remarks come at a time when Team India, under Gambhir's guidance, faces mounting pressure following a disappointing 0-3 Test series whitewash at home against New Zealand. In his press conference, Gambhir openly addressed the team's struggles.

He stated that India "deserves the criticism" it has faced and emphasized that social media backlash does not affect him. He also responded to Ricky Ponting's comments on Kohli's form, hinting at resilience within the squad and stressing his focus on internal strength over external critiques.

Despite Gambhir's unapologetically blunt style, Manjrekar's comments suggest that he believes such a direct approach might not be conducive in media interactions, particularly when the team is under scrutiny. He recommended that either Indian captain Rohit Sharma or chief selector Ajit Agarkar-both of whom he believes have a more composed demeanor-handle press duties instead.

The press conference also saw Gambhir address questions on captain Rohit Sharma's fitness and the team's readiness for the rigorous Australian series. However, it appears his responses, especially his unwavering stance against online criticism and his dismissal of Ricky Ponting's views, have fueled controversy.

India's tour of Australia begins on November 22 in Perth, with the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy set to test both the players and the management. Whether Manjrekar's concerns lead to any changes in the team's media representation remains to be seen as fans, and former players alike closely monitor India's performance on Australian soil.
