Former Indian cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has reignited discussions about AB de Villiers' IPL career, claiming that the South African legend's full potential in the league remained underutilized.
Speaking on a Star Sports show, Manjrekar suggested that de Villiers might have showcased even more of his brilliance had he played for a different IPL franchise and RCB wasn't the right one.

de Villiers, one of the most celebrated cricketers in IPL history, began his journey in 2008 with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). After three seasons, he moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2011, where he became a cornerstone of the team for 11 seasons. During his IPL career, he amassed 5162 runs in 184 matches, earning a reputation as one of the most entertaining and consistent performers in the tournament.
However, despite his individual heroics, de Villiers was unable to secure an IPL title. He reached the finals twice with RCB-in 2011 and 2016-but both campaigns ended in disappointment. While his legacy remains untarnished, Manjrekar believes that the South African's IPL impact could have been even greater under different circumstances.
"AB de Villiers was undoubtedly phenomenal," Manjrekar said during the show when asked if Suryakumar Yadav has eclipsed De Villiers as T20 cricket's "Mr. 360." He elaborated, "But in IPL, AB's true ability wasn't entirely harnessed. He was often sent lower down the order, which limited his impact in some games. And, unfortunately, he played for the wrong team. If he had been with another franchise, perhaps we would have seen even more of his brilliance."
Manjrekar's comments have sparked debate among fans and experts alike. While many agree that de Villiers' role as a finisher at RCB limited his opportunities to bat longer and dominate innings, others argue that he was integral to RCB's success and still delivered match-winning performances consistently.
The comparison between de Villiers and Suryakumar Yadav also added fuel to the discussion. While the ex RCB star's versatility and contributions across formats make him a legend, Manjrekar highlighted Suryakumar's impact in T20 cricket specifically, citing his ability to win matches regularly in the shortest format.
"I'll say yes, because of the match-winning impact. AB was incredible. But AB's greatness was that he averaged 50 in Tests. Even in one day (ODIs). So, he's an amazing player. But only if you look at T20 cricket; I've seen both of them a lot," Manjrekar noted.
Despite the controversies and comparisons, AB de Villiers remains a towering figure in IPL history. His audacious batting, ability to handle pressure, and unmatched innovation have cemented his place as one of the league's all-time greats. Whether or not he could have achieved even more with a different franchise will remain a topic of speculation, but his contributions to the game are beyond dispute.
