Sanju Samson Backed in T20Is but ignored in ODIs on Sri Lanka tour - A bittersweet tale for his fans

While India's new head coach Gautam Gambhir has shown confidence in the Kerala-born cricketer by backing him for the T20Is, his exclusion from the ODI squad is indeed a bittersweet pill for his supporters to swallow.

The fact that his exclusion from the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka tour is a perplexing decision that has left many supporters and cricket analysts scratching their heads.

While his inclusion in the T20I squad is seen as a significant step, his proven ODI record suggests that he should have been picked in the squad and perhaps India missed a lost opportunity by not drafting him in the mix. For the record, Sanju Samson's journey in the Indian outfit has been anything but smooth.

Despite his undeniable talent and consistent performances, the 29-year-old often found himself on the fringes of selection. His ODI career statistics speak volumes about his capabilities and in just 16 ODIs he played for the team, he has amassed 510 runs at an impressive average of 56.7, laced with one century and three fifties.

This goes to show that he has made the most of his limited opportunities and delivered when it mattered the most for the Men in Blue. Moreover, he showcased his mettle across various batting positions in the 50-over format.

When batting at No. 6, he boasts a staggering average of 90, highlighting his prowess in handling pressure situations and finishing games. On the other hand, at No. 3, he averages 54.33, giving us a strong hint that he can anchor the innings and build crucial partnerships.

Even at No. 4, he has done pretty well, maintaining a solid average of 51. Meanwhile, Sanju Samson's fans would indeed be upset after the cricketer's exclusion from the ODI squad, especially in light of his T20I inclusion. For sure, there is no doubt that Samson is someone who has the talent to address the middle-order concerns that have plagued the team in recent years.

By not including him in the ODI mix, the Men in Blue might have missed a trick as the cricketer brings the match-winning potential to the table. However, Samson will be next seen in the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka.

As he gears up to showcase his talent in the T20Is, his fans will be hoping that the national selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar will recognize and utilise his full potential when he is in his prime so that he is not overlooked again in future assignments.
