AB de Villiers has thrown his weight behind Sanju Samson as the ideal long-term successor to MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings, praising the franchise's vision ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
Speaking on JioStar's IPL Today Live, de Villiers said CSK have finally identified the right player to take the baton forward from Dhoni, who has been synonymous with the franchise for over a decade.

"Sanju Samson is the right guy to take over, and credit to Dhoni because he's hung around, waiting for the right person to come."
CSK's decision to bring in Samson ahead of IPL 2026 is widely seen as part of a long-term succession plan, even though Ruturaj Gaikwad continues as captain.
De Villiers highlighted how Dhoni's presence has been central to CSK's identity but acknowledged that the franchise must eventually transition into a new era.
"When you mention CSK, you immediately think of Dhoni. In the last few years, his role has been about keeping that brand strong."
The South African legend emphasised that Samson's arrival signals a structured transition rather than a sudden change, something CSK have historically managed well.
Former India captain Anil Kumble also backed the move, pointing out that Samson brings both leadership experience and strong form into the squad.
"Sanju coming in is a great move for CSK. He has captained Rajasthan for a long period, so that leadership role comes naturally to him."
Kumble added that Samson's recent performances, including his standout showing in India's T20 World Cup triumph, make him a valuable addition.
While Dhoni remains part of the setup, the signs are clear that CSK are preparing for the future. Samson's presence in the leadership group could be crucial in ensuring a smooth transition.
With IPL 2026 set to begin, all eyes will be on how CSK balance legacy and evolution, with Samson expected to play a key role in shaping the next phase of the franchise.
