Sanju Samson recently revealed an emotional moment he shared with captain Rohit Sharma before the 2024 T20 World Cup final. Despite not being selected in the playing XI for the final against South Africa, Samson opened up about the deep respect he developed for Rohit, who took time to explain the last-minute decision.
Speaking in an interview with journalist Vimal Kumar, Samson shared that he had been informed before the final to stay ready, with a chance of making the XI. "I had a chance to play the final. I was told to stay ready. I was ready," Samson said.

However, moments before the toss, the decision was made to retain the same team that had played throughout the tournament, with Rishabh Pant continuing as the first-choice wicketkeeper. What touched Samson was Rohit's personal gesture before the match.
During warm-ups, Rohit approached Samson to explain the reasoning behind the decision. "Rohit took me to the side and started to explain to me why they were sticking with the same XI. He was very casual, asking, 'You understood, na?'" Samson recalled, adding that Rohit returned a minute later to check on him, jokingly saying, "I know you are cursing me in your mind."
While Samson respected the decision, he admitted that not playing under Rohit's leadership in a World Cup final would be a regret he carried for life. "Since childhood, I wanted to come here and do something special. I told Rohit, 'I will have a regret; I could not play a World Cup final with a leader like you.'"
The emotional conversation struck a chord with Samson. "Before the toss, instead of focusing on the players or the game, Rohit spent 10 minutes explaining the decision to me. That gesture won him a place in my heart forever," he said.
Samson, though disappointed, later reflected on how the captain's gesture showed his leadership qualities. "In such a high-pressure moment, to spend time with someone not even playing, that's something rare." Despite missing out on the final, Samson's respect for Rohit only grew, leaving a lasting impact that he said will stay with him for a lifetime.
