Meet Saransh Jain: The 33-Year-Old Who Finally Got His India Cap
Saransh Jain's long wait for India recognition ended on Sunday as the 33-year-old Madhya Pradesh allrounder made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in the second match of the series in Colombo.
Jain received his maiden India cap from Ravindra Jadeja during the team's huddle, capping a domestic career that has stretched over more than a decade. His selection came after a breakthrough 2025-26 Ranji Trophy campaign and a strong run of form for Central Zone and India A.

At 33 years and 145 days, Jain became India's oldest Test debutant in the 21st century. He is also the oldest Indian to make his Test debut since Robin Singh, who debuted aged 35 years and 23 days against Zimbabwe in 1998.
Who is Saransh Jain?
Born in Madhya Pradesh, Jain is a left-handed batter and right-arm offspinner who has built his reputation primarily through red-ball cricket.
He has played 54 first-class matches, scoring 2,223 runs at an average of 31.75 and taking 188 wickets at 27.30. He has also featured in 67 List A matches and 20 T20s, although it was his consistency in first-class cricket that eventually brought him into India's reckoning.
Jain is the son of former first-class cricketer Subodh Jain and spent much of his career outside the spotlight.
He made his Ranji Trophy debut in 2014 but emerged as a significant domestic performer several years later. Having played only eight first-class matches until 2022, Jain became a key figure during Madhya Pradesh's run to their maiden Ranji Trophy title, taking 13 wickets and scoring a half-century in the knockouts.
Saransh Jain's breakthrough Ranji Trophy season
The 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season proved to be Jain's most productive campaign yet.
He scored 518 runs at an average of 57.55 and claimed 30 wickets at 20.43 for Madhya Pradesh. His performances established him as one of the leading bowling allrounders on the domestic circuit.
Jain then carried that form into the Duleep Trophy, where he represented Central Zone. He scored two half-centuries and took 16 wickets across two matches, earning Player of the Series honours.
That run brought him closer to the India setup.
## Jain's India A performances strengthened his case
Jain's performances in Sri Lanka for India A further strengthened his credentials.
After a quiet outing in the first unofficial Test, he made a significant impact in the second, scoring an unbeaten 70 and taking six wickets.
He was subsequently involved with India's Test setup as a net bowler ahead of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh.
His progress eventually culminated in a place in India's Test XI for the second Test against Sri Lanka.
Why is Saransh Jain making his India debut at 33?
Jain's route to international cricket has been markedly different from that of many modern Indian players.
He made his first-class debut in 2014-15 but took several years to establish himself as a consistent performer. His breakthrough came after turning 30, with his performances in the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and India A giving the selectors enough evidence to back him at the highest level.
His selection was also aided by changes to India's bowling combination. Kuldeep Yadav missed the second Test due to an infection, while Washington Sundar was previously ruled out with an injury.
Jain was ultimately preferred in the XI as India opted for a bowling allrounder capable of contributing with both bat and ball.
Saransh Jain's rare IPL record
Jain has also reached international cricket without making an appearance in the IPL.
That places him among a small group of Indian players who have played for the national team before featuring in the IPL. His career has instead been built almost entirely around domestic red-ball cricket.
For Jain, his Test debut is therefore the culmination of a pathway based on sustained performances in the longer format rather than the franchise circuit.
India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test: Playing XIs
India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first in Colombo.
India XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (w), Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Saransh Jain, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.
Sri Lanka XI: Lahiru Udara, Kamil Mishara, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva (c), Sonal Dinusha, Niroshan Dickwella (w), Keshara Nuwantha, Prabath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumara, Asitha Fernando.
For Jain, the Test against Sri Lanka represents the latest step in a career that took more than a decade to reach the international stage. His debut at 33 underlines the value of sustained domestic performance and gives India another spin-bowling allrounder to assess in Test cricket.
