Sarfaraz Khan after Irani Cup double hundred: 'Promised a hundred for me and hundred for my injured brother'

By MyKhel Staff

Sarfaraz Khan put Mumbai in a strong position in the ongoing Irani Cup 2024 by scoring unbeaten 222 runs in the first innings at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, and also fulfilled a big promise.

Sarfaraz, who was seen serving drinks to India batters until September 30 during the second Test against Bangladesh, quickly got into the match mode on October 1, and ended up scoring a double hundred on Day 2 - October 2.

The match was an emotional one for Sarfaraz Khan as his brother, who was also picked in the Mumbai squad, suffered a near-fatal car accident while travelling to Lucknow ahead of the match.

The 19-year-old suffered a fracture in his neck, and will reportedly be out of action for at least three months now. Sarfaraz and Musheer share a very close bond with each other, and have always backed each other immensely through their cricketing journey.

The elder brother after hitting the sensational Irani Cup double hundred revealed that he had promised his family and teammates to score two hundreds - one for himself and the other one for Musheer.

"It has been an emotional week for me. I had promised my family and teammates that 'if I am set, if I cross the fifty, I will score a double hundred - a hundred for me and hundred for my brother (Musheer)," Sarfaraz said after Day 3 of the Irani Cup.

"If he (Musheer) would have played, Abbu (father Naushad) would have been prouder. Unfortunately, he met with an accident. So, I thought I have to somehow score a double ton in this match," he added.

India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav also shared an emotional Instagram Story to congratulate Sarfaraz on his double hundred.

"100 Musheer ka, 100 Sarfaraz ka," he wrote.

Sarfaraz's unbeaten 222 is the highest score by a Mumbai batter in Irani Cup. The 26-year-old also became the fourth-youngest player to hit a double ton in the tournament after Gundappa Viswanath (25 years and 255 days), Pravin Amre (22 years and 80 days), and Yashasvi Jaiswal (21 years and 63 days). Also, the 26-year-old has joined an illustrious group of players, including Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Shikhar Dhawan, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who each have two centuries in the Irani Cup.
