Bangladesh's iconic all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been banned from bowling in all tournaments organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). This follows an independent assessment at Loughborough University.
They found his bowling action violated the 15-degree elbow extension threshold defined by ECB regulations. The suspension, effective from December 10, 2024, stems from a report by umpires during Shakib's solitary appearance for Surrey in the County Championship match against Somerset in September.

In that game, Shakib delivered a remarkable performance, taking nine wickets across two innings, but his action was flagged for scrutiny. To regain bowling eligibility in ECB competitions, Shakib must pass an independent reassessment, proving that his bowling action meets regulatory standards.
The ban adds another chapter to what has been a turbulent period for the 37-year-old's illustrious career. Known for his left-arm spin and match-winning capabilities with the bat, Shakib has not played international cricket since October 2024.
This hiatus coincided with significant political controversies in Bangladesh. Shakib is a Member of Parliament under the now-dissolved Awami League government. He faced backlash during nationwide protests earlier this year.
The protests resulted in numerous civilian casualties. Amid the uproar, he announced his retirement from T20Is and skipped what was supposed to be his farewell Test in Mirpur. Shakib's recent involvement with Surrey was his first County Championship appearance since 2010-11.
His recruitment for the Somerset match was strategic, as the Taunton pitch was expected to favor spinners. While Surrey lost the match by 111 runs, they clinched the championship title, with Shakib's bowling remaining a highlight despite the defeat.
Currently unsigned for the 2025 English county season, Shakib's path back to competitive cricket as a bowler hinges on clearing an independent reassessment of his action. This suspension raises concerns about his future contributions to franchise cricket and his diminishing presence on the international stage.
