Boosting the ever-thickening line between cricket and politics in Bangladesh, the country's cricket captain, Shakib Al Hasan, is set to step into the political arena.

Shakib has confirmed his nomination for the upcoming 12th parliamentary elections from the ruling Awami League party. He is slated to contest from the Magura 1 constituency, his home district, with the elections scheduled for January 7.

Shakib's Cricketing Career Amid Political Ambitions

Shakib is currently on the path of recovery from a finger injury he suffered during the World Cup match against Sri Lanka on November 6. The timeline for his return to the field remains uncertain.

With Bangladesh touring New Zealand for six white-ball matches from December 11 to 31, and Shakib being the T20I leader, his participation is a question of significant interest amidst his political campaigning.

Crossover of Cricket and Politics in Bangladesh

The interplay of cricket and politics is not a new phenomenon in Bangladesh. Shakib follows in the footsteps of Mashrafe Mortaza, another former Bangladesh cricket captain, who became an MP in the previous elections. The BCB president Nazmul Hassan has been an MP since 2009, and the BCB director Shafiul Alam Chowdhury has also received a nomination for the upcoming elections.

This crossover, however, is quite rare among international cricketers, with Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya being one of the few who have ventured into politics while still being an active player.

As Shakib Al Hasan enters the political landscape while juggling his cricketing commitments, it will be interesting to see how he balances these two demanding roles.

His journey will add a unique chapter to the narrative of cricketer-turned-politicians in Bangladesh, and potentially, inspire other active players to consider public service. The upcoming parliamentary elections are certainly going to be an exciting time for both politics and cricket in Bangladesh.

The left-handed batting and bowling all-rounder led Bangladesh in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 where the Men in Green and Red failed to make an impression and were eliminated.

Shakib's fallout with senior cricketer Tamim Iqbal just before the start of the World Cup garnered more attention than the team's preparations. The war of words between two senior players also impacted the overall mood of the dressing room, further contributing to the team's poor run in the global extravaganza.

Shakib was also released by his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the IPL 2024 Auction. The senior cricketer might take a call on his IPL future later.
